Skinternal Medicine’s Recent Interview with Molly Moye, MD, FAAD

Molly Moye, MD, FAAD, a Board-Certified Dermatologist and Fellowship-Trained Mohs Surgeon

Dr. Moye received rave reviews for her lectures at Skinternal Medicine 2018 on skin cancers and moles and melanoma. Back by popular demand, Dr. Moye will be returning for Skinternal Medicine 2019 on April 12 in Louisville, KY.  Her lecture topics this year include Sneaky Skin Cancers: How Not to Miss Them and Common In-Office Dermatology Procedures.

What are you looking forward to most about the upcoming conference 2019? About your lecture?

MM: I enjoyed learning from the other presenters last year as much as I enjoyed sharing information about skin cancer! This year I will be discussing sneaky skin cancers and common dermatologic procedures, which are all office based and performed using local anesthesia. I hope to include videos to help attendees better understand how these procedures are done so that they can be incorporated into their practices.

Why do you think primary care providers should attend this conference?

MM: Primary care providers actually provide most dermatologic care due to dermatologist shortages. Building a primary care provider’s confidence in treating rashes and acne, and identifying lesions concerning for skin cancer really helps all patients.

What is one clinical pearl or piece of advice you find most helpful about common diseases of the skin that you would like to share?

MM: I shared this last year at the conference, but basically you don’t know what’s on someone’s skin unless you look. Going back to the basics of lifting patient’s shirts to auscultate their heart and lungs and to palpate their abdomen, over the course of a career you will identify melanomas, saving people’s lives. Doing skin exams does not have to add extra time to an already busy clinic schedule, and you are doing your patients a huge service!

What is your area of interest or area of expertise with the field of dermatology?

MM: My specific training is in Mohs micrographic surgery, which is used to treat non-melanoma skin cancer such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, usually on high risk sites such as the face and neck. My training also includes reconstruction of the wounds created in removing these tumors, which is sometimes quite complex.

What can you tell us about your training in Dermatology?

MM: I did my residency training at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. I had a wonderful experience there surrounded by excellent co-residents and a largely female faculty that demanded our best. I had wonderful surgical mentors in residency who encouraged me to pursue specialty training in Mohs surgery. I then moved to Dallas, Texas where I completed a fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology. It was an intense year of total surgical immersion, and it was so much fun! I had the opportunity to teach residents at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, which was great.

What do you love most about Dermatology as a field?

MM: I love helping people feel more comfortable in their skin, whether that means curing an itchy rash or helping a young person with acne. It’s amazing to see people’s confidence improve as their skin disease resolves. I spend most of my time treating skin cancer, and I love getting to know my patients during their procedures.

What attracted you to go into the field of dermatology?

MM: I was attracted by the variety of patients, ages and conditions treated by dermatologists. Our treatment armamentarium has grown tremendously over the last few years, and I like that we have so many options for treating patients from topical to systemic therapies, and lasers to surgery.

Who is been a helpful mentor to you?

MM: Oh, there are so many people from my residency training at the University of Iowa and UT Southwestern in Texas where I did my fellowship!

What do you hope to contribute to the field of Dermatology throughout your career?

MM: Most importantly, I plan to contribute to the field of dermatology by providing excellent and ethical care to my patients. Within the field, I am involved in several committees within the American Academy of Dermatology and the American College of Mohs Surgery, and I plan to remain involved throughout my career.

Is there anything that others would be surprised to know about you? Any unique talents or traits or something else that would be surprising?

MM: Oh gosh, not really… I am pretty boring! My time is mainly consumed by work and raising twin toddlers right now, so I don’t really have time for interesting hobbies or travel. I’d say on weekends you are most likely to find us bouncing at House of Boom or exploring the Kentucky Science Center.

Thank you, Dr. Moye! We are looking forward to learning more about skin cancer and procedures in dermatology from you at Skinternal Medicine 2019 on April 12 in Louisville, KY!
